It all started here...

Ever walked into a Wal-Mart and wondered what the first one looked like?  Or who opened it?  Well, here's your chance to see.

The first Wal-Mart store was opened in 1962 by a salesman named Sam Walton. Today, Walmart (the brand by which "Wal-Mart Stores, Inc" has used since 2008) has over 2 million people employed and is the worlds largest retailer. The first store was called "Walton's Five and Dime".

Hope you enjoyed that little tidbit of history that most people don't realize when they walk into a Wal-Mart to by discounted products.

  1. No, that isn't the first Walmart but the Walmart gift shop/museum in down town Bentonville. The first Walmart was in Rogers, Arkansas at the corner of 8th and Walnut. The building is now a plumbing store and is just a few blocks from my house. Bentonville and Rogers are next to each other.

  2. Exactly. This is a photo of the site and location of the first Five and Dime which preceded the first Walmart (now site to the Walmart gift shop and museum). The first Five and Dime -- located here on the Bentonville Town Square -- opened in 1950, not 1962, and this photo appears to have been take in neither year. Misleading and confusing original post.
